IMSI is the brainchild of Shauna Hedgepeth and Joel Bezaire, two middle school teachers with over 40 years of classroom teaching experience combined.


Shauna Hedgepeth
Shauna Hedgepeth (or “Hedge”) teaches 8th Grade math and 7th Grade science at Purvis Middle School and is a visiting faculty member at Mount Holyoke College where she teaches a course for K-8 teachers on modeling with data. Her previous work includes teaching AP Statistics and serving as a K-12 math curriculum specialist for her district.
Joel Bezaire
Joel Bezaire teaches 8th Grade math/Algebra 1 at the University School of Nashville, where he has taught since 2002. He was a Cohort 4 Desmos Fellow and Certified Presenter, has been a two-time national semi-finalist for the Museum of Math’s Rosenthal Prize, and was the inaugural winner of USN’s Bovender Family Faculty Chair for “modeling the best in innovative teaching practices and thorough involvement in the life of the school”. Joel serves on the Board of Directors for The Educators’ Cooperative in Nashville, TN.
